Clara Barton

Here is Joy's version of Clara Barton:

Angel of the Battlefield

By Joy

Extremely intelligent, extraordinarily brave, and exceedingly committed, Clara Barton, the Angel of the Battlefield, became a heroine to girls for generations.  Born on Christmas in 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts, she was the youngest of seven children.  While growing up in a typical farm family, she gained practical knowledge from being homeschooled, and became a teacher at an unusually young age.  During the Civil War she rescued and revived hundreds of soldiers, she helped as much as ants help in their colonies.  She rested in Switzerland.  In Switzerland she learned about the Red Cross, which ultimately became her life’s work.  She founded and led the American Red Cross until 1904, when she retired at the age of 83.  Clearly, her contributions have enriched plenty of people’s lives.

Clara Barton was shy, small, and patient.  In her childhood, she had a pet turkey.  When her father told her war stories she was extremely interested.  Once when she wanted to go skating, her father stated, “Sorry, Clara you can’t go skating, because it’s just not lady-like.  What would the neighbors think about this?”  Clara decided to skate anyway, and ended up falling, so she now knew what it felt like to be injured.  Feeling pity on other patients, Clara wanted to help them.  Lovingly, when she was eleven years old, she nursed her brother David, who was terribly injured in an accident.  When Clara turned 15,  she started teaching.  Clara was patient and successful.

Beginning in 1861, Clara’s help as a nurse started.  In 1862, Clara, who was definitelydetermined to help the wounded, was given permission to travel with the sick transports.  Clara was extremely helpful.  Sadly, in the United Stated of America women were not allowed on the disturbing battlefield, because it was not considered to be lady like.  When Clara became a nurse for the Army, she gave a lot of other women the courage to do the same.

In 1882, Clara founded the American Red Cross.  Surprisingly, she was their first president for twenty-two years.  The Red Cross helps needy people.  How do they help these people?  They help by kindly bringing food, clothes, nurses, doctors, and medicine to those who need it.  When people who are worried need help, the Red Cross is a sign of hope, because they can do just that.

During Clara Barton’s life, she was extremely successful.  Growing up on a farm, Clara enjoyed helping her family as much as she did the soldiers.   When Clara went to Switzerland, she learned about the Red Cross.  The Red Cross assists disadvantaged people. Clara wanted to help. She found a way.  Joyfully, she founded the American Red Cross, which is the most important thing about her life.  It is so important because it is still saving many lives today.  Clara Barton, who became a helpful nurse in the Civil War, is known as the Angel of the Battlefield.  She died on April 12, 1912.
