Amazing Ancient Egypt

          Amazing Ancient Egypt
                                                                                                    By Matthew

Ancient egypt was a wonderful place with all kinds of things to do and see such as mummies and pyramids and sphinxes oh my.  One of the spectacular seven wonders of ancient Egypt is in Giza.  It’s the Great Pyramid!  Amazingly this marvelous monument, which towers 450 ft. tall above the base, is 756 ft. on each side!  It contains over 2 million bricks each weighing 2 and a half tons!  It is believed to have taken approximately 20 years and 100,000 men to build one pyramid.  They built pyramids for pharaohs and queens as tombs.  They would start construction years before the royal died.  They made traps and secret passage ways to keep tomb robbers away but sadly most of the treasures have been stolen.  Few  treasures are still left today but luckily the Great Pyramid is still standing today.

A sphinx is a imaginary creature that is in numerous ancient egypt myths.  It has a body of a lion and a head of either a man, a ferocious falcon, or a raging ram.  Many of the sphinxes, which were fashioned to honor the kings, often incredibly resembled the kings.  Significantly they were the symbol of power and protection.  The most famous sphinx is the towering Great Sphinx that sits beside the Great Pyramid.  It is the oldest and largest  sphinx standing today!  It is 240 ft. long and 60 ft. high.  Now that’s cool! The sphinx is a truly amazing imaginary creature.

A mummy is a preciously preserved body that has died.  The Egyptians, who believed that the bodies were needed for the after life, mummified the truly dead bodies.  Tediously, it was believed that it took 70 days to mummify someone.  It was a long process.  The priests put the mummified body inside many coffins.  They believed that the mummies needed spells to keep them safe in the afterlife so they put spells in their tomb.  Some mummies are still presently preserved today!  Those are only a few of the preserved treasures of the amazing ancient egypt.

Fashion Friday: Fishtail Braid

Fashion Friday Presents:

Fishtail Braid

By Jasmine

How to do a Fish Tail Braid!

You have to start out by dividing the hair in 2 parts.  Then you take a little portion from the right half and place it in the left half.  Take another small portion only from the left half and place the small portion in the right half.  You keep on doing this until you run out of hair.  When you’re done spread the braid just a little bit.  Not too much or part of the braid will come undone.

Charlemagne

Charlemagne
By J.C.
In the year 742 AD, a boy named Charles was born. His father, Pepin the Short, was the king of the Franks.
In 768, poor Pepin died and Charles, along with his brother, Carloman, inherited the kingdom. When Carloman died, Charles took over it all and began to spread his empire---and Christianity--- all over. He was soon called “Charlemagne,” which means “Charles the Great” in Latin.
In 800, the pope named Charlemagne the Holy Roman emperor. Charlemagne loved learning. He highly encouraged it, and had his servants’ kids learn with his own kids. He founded schools in monasteries, too.
In 814, Charlemagne died, and his three grandsons took over the kingdom.

Stop Motion Animation

Stop Motion Animation
By Nicholas

Have you ever looked at a toy and wished it could move? I have found the solution to that in stop motion animation. This process can make a pose-able toy look like it is moving! Stop motion animation can be called many things:Toymation, Legomation, and Machinamation. Here I will call it stop motion.

Now I will explain the process of stop motion:

1.Gather important materials. First, find some items for a set, rocks, twigs, plastic trees, and bed sheets. Then you need to find a digital camera.

2.Construct your set.

3.Find a pose-able toy to animate. Toys that will work are:action figures, Lego people, toy cars, Barbies, Polly pockets, smaller dolls. If the toy does not stand up by itself I recommend Blue Sticky Tack to help the toy stand.

4.Get the toy upright. Move the toy in the action you want to start and then take a picture. Then make a small movement with the toy and take another picture. This is the longest part of stop motion. Repeat these steps until the movement is created.

5.Upload all the pictures to your computer.

6.This is the tricky part. If you have Windows Movie Maker use that. If not try Monkeyjam, a free downloadable animation software. If you have an Ipod or a smart phone I know there are some apps for stop motion.

7. Follow the instructions of your movie maker by putting the pictures in order to complete your movie. As you create your movie you can add titles, credits, and freeware music.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on stop motion animation!

The Writing

The Writing

By Matthew

Belshazzar, who was Nebuchadnezzar’s son, was in his palace in Babylon.  He stared glaringly at the captivating ziggurats bigger than even the tallest pyramid.   Compassionately he glazed at the Hanging Gardens his father fashioned for his wife.  Then he brought his eyes over to the Ishtar Gate it was between the amazing Euphrates and Tigris rivers.  It was all his.  He felt like he was the greatest king ever.

One day a messenger rushed nervously to the palace loudly calling, “King Cyrus and the Persians are attacking the empire. Please help us.”
“Let them try to destroy us,”  bravely Belshazzar bellowed boldly. “We are safe inside these sturdy great walls.  I am the courageous king.  Our gods, who are powerful, will protect us.”
Foolishly, instead of preparing the armies, he decided to have a great banquet.  He invited all the important people to it. Everyone was eating and drinking greatly and having a wonderful time not caring at all about the Persians.
“Bring me the gold and silver vessels my father took from the temple in Jerusalem,” Belshazzar commanded his servant. “Let us toast our gods with them!”
Everyone raised the holy vessels.

Suddenly, out of nowhere a man’s hand, which was horrifying, appeared and depict a message on the wall in an indefinite language the king did not know.  The king was scared.  So he hurriedly called for his wise men.  “What does this mean?” he asked.
The wise men could not figure out what it meant.  The king got even more nervous.
Then the queen suggested, “There is a man named Daniel, who is a Israelite, with much wisdom.  Send for him.”
When Daniel arrived, he looked at the writing on the wall and boldly exclaimed, “Because you honored yourself instead of the true mighty God, God sent this message.  It claims God will divide your kingdom to the Medes and Persians.”
That night Cyrus and his armies marched into the city.  Belshazzar was slain and his kingdom was taken, just as the writing claimed.

A Book Review: A Year Without Autumn

A Book Review: A Year Without Autumn
By J.C.

A Year Without Autumn is a novel by Liz Kessler about a girl named Jenni. Jenni always goes to stay in a condo for vacation every year, and her best friend Autumn always goes too. But when she’s on vacation, she goes in an old elevator up to Autumn’s floor that her condo is on,  and when she steps out, it is a year later and disaster has struck Autumn’s family! Jenni must find a way to get back to the present time to stop the disaster from happening. This is definitely one of my favorite books. It is sad in some parts, but in other parts it is really funny! I would give this book 5 out of 5 years!

Tornados

Tornados

By Guest Writer S.B.

Tornadoes are by far the most destructive storms on earth. Their winds can reach up to 318 miles per hour. They can be short or long tornadoes. Some last only a few seconds, and some last hours. They can move up to 72 miles per hour. There are six types of tornadoes: EF0, EF1, EF2, EF3, EF4, and EF5. And EF0 can knock down small trees and shatter windows, and their winds are only about from 42 miles per hour to 70 miles per hour. An EF5, on the other hand, leaves nothing standing. They can pick up whole houses and send them flying. Their winds are from 256 to 318 miles per hour. To stay safe during a tornado, get as low as possible. If you live in a mobile home, get out. If you’re in a car and a tornado warning comes, it may seem safe to stay in the car, because their is a lot of weight and it seems hard for a tornado to pick it up. Get out of the car! Lie in a ditch or cover your head and huddle by a brick wall. If there are no options, scrunch up into a ball and cover your head best you can. Tornadoes happen mostly in the mid U.S, when warm air flows in from Mexico and cool air flows in from the Rocky Mountains. When warm air and cool air combines together, it makes rotation which can cause a funnel cloud. The chances of a funnel cloud touching the ground and becoming a tornado are very slim.

S'mores Cake

S’mores Cake

Full time to make: 1 hour 30 minutes

Baked by J.C.

Ingredients:
Yellow cake mix (And the ingredients listed on the box)
Graham crackers
Chocolate chips
Mini marshmallows
Marshmallow creme
Chocolate frosting

Tools:
Large bowl
Whisk
Two spatulas
Butter knife (Or anything you can spread frosting with)
Plastic bag
8-inch round pans

Directions:
  1. Preheat your oven according to what your cake mix box says.
  2. Make a cake according to the directions on the cake box. Crush some graham crackers down to crumbs and add them to the mix.
  3. Next, pour the batter evenly into your two pans. Smooth the batter with a spatula and place them in the oven. Cook according to the cake mix box, but we found 26 minutes good.
  4. When the cakes are done, take them out and let them fully cool. Then take one cake and carefully turn the pan over so the cake falls upside-down on a plate.
  5. Get the marshmallow creme and spread it over the top of the cake that is on the plate with a spatula. Get some more graham crackers and crack them, not smash them, and place them side by side on the marshmallow creme.
  6. Place the next cake on top of the other one so the marshmallow creme is in the middle. If necessary, use mini marshmallows to support the top cake.
  7. This step can be hard. Using the chocolate frosting and your frosting spreader, cover the entire cake⎯sides and all⎯with frosting.
  8. Take your mini marshmallows and arrange them with the chocolate chips on top as decoration.

So Called "Contradictions"

So Called "Contradictions"
By Joy

A lot of people think that there are contradictions in the Bible, but that is not true.  The Bible can never contradict itself.  For example some people think that Matthew 27:5 and Acts1:18 contradict!

Matthew 27:5-
So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

Acts 1:18-
(With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell head long, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.

Both these verses are talking about how Judas died, after he betrayed Jesus.  The reason they seem to contradict is  because in Matthew it says he hung himself, but in Acts it says his body burst open and his intestines spilled out.  While both these verses seem to contradict each other they actually are complementary!  The way it happened was Judas hung himself and a day or two later he fell and his body burst open.

Some people believe that these verses contradict each other, although that is not the case.  There are plenty of other verses that seem to contradict each other, but do not, because once again the Bible can never contradict itself.

Where Are We?

Where Are We?

A man and his wife were driving their RV across the country and were nearing a town called Kissimmee.  They noted the strange spelling and tried to figure out how to pronounce it: KISS-i-ME, kiss-I-me, kiss-i-ME.  They grew more and more confused as they drove into town.  Because they were hungry, they pulled into a restaurant to get something to eat.  At the counter, the man said to the server: "My wife and I can't figure out how to pronounce the name of this place.  Will you tell me where we are and say it very slowly so that I can understand?"

The server looked at him and said: "Buuurrrgerrr Kiiiinnnng."

Nerf Gun Review:Praxis

Nerf Gun Review:Praxis
By Matthew
The Praxis is an awesome gun!  The length is 26 inches (2ft 2in).  On the gun the colors are green, orange, and grey.  It comes with 10 discs along with a holder for them.  It shoots bullets the farthest I’ve ever seen (well of non-battery guns)!  This is one of the only guns that has not had any jamming problems so far, and I’ve bought quite a few of guns.  I especially like this gun because it is really easy to bring around because it comes apart (I can even fit it in my backpack)!!!  I rate this gun 4 out of 5 whistling darts!
This retails for about $30, but on Amazon you can buy it for only $25!

A Movie Review:War Horse

A Movie Review:War Horse
By Jasmine

This movie is pretty much explained by the title.  There is a horse named Joey who is taken away from his owner, Albert (Jeremy Irvine), who lived on a beautiful farm with his mother and father, to join the war.  Throughout this movie you see Joey trying to survive and find his Albert again while meeting some friends:  Captain Nicolas (Tom Hiddleston), Major Stewart (Benedict Cumberbatch), Topthorn (Captain Stewart horse), Corporal Samuel Perkins (Geoff Bell), Emilie (Celine Buckens), Emilie’s grandfather (Niels Anestrup), Friedrich (Nicolas Brow), and David (Robert Emms).  This is an action packed movie with here and there funny moments.  The movie feels like it brings you back in time when World War I started!

Warning!

This is a war movie so people do die.  It isn’t too scary, but it is sad.  This is a PG movie.
Over all this is a great movie to watch and I recommend it.  I give this movie 4 out of 5 horse hooves!

My Love of Theatre! By Joy

I was recently cast as Helen Keller in the Miracle Worker!  If you don't know who Hellen Keller is she was a girl, who at the age of one and a half, got scarlet fever.  The scarlet fever  caused her to be blind and deaf.  The Keller family thought there was no way to reach Helen. They hired Annie Sullivan to try and teach her.  At first this was a disaster.  Helen ran away from Annie whenever she touched her (since she couldn't hear or see her).  Annie taught her with the sign language alphabet.  Eventually Annie and Helen became great friends and they stuck together the rest of their lives.  Back to the point.  As I put in Meet Joy!, I love to act!  I am also in Oliver with my two brothers Andrew and Matthew, my sisters, and my dad.

Nerf Gun Review:Stampede

Nerf Gun Review:Stampede

By Scotty

One of the fastest shooting nerf guns is the Stampede.  It shoots 4 bullets per second. That’s really good for a nerf gun!  It’s a great automatic gun and the length is about 2ft and 5 inches long. It also has the colors yellow, orange, and gray and takes 6 D batteries. That’s a lot of batteries but it last a long time. It comes in a huge box with a lot of stuff. I’ll name them; it comes with the gun (obviously), 3 clips that hold 18 darts, 1 clip that holds 6 darts, 54 slip stream bullets, a bipod, and a shield.
This gun is awesome for any kind of nerf gun battle. I’ll give this gun 5 out of 5 Nerf bullets and I definitely recommend this gun.

Fashion Friday:Flower Nails

Fashion Friday Presents:

Flower Nails

By Clair

These flowers are super easy to do on your nails!!!

1.  Pick you base color, I like baby blue!

2.  Apply strokes of nail polish you may need to apply more then one coat.

3.  Check if it is dry by getting a tooth pick and poke the side of your nail.

4.  If nail polish is dry add one clear coat of nail polish.

5.  To start the flower pour two very small piles (different colors) of nail polish onto a paper plate.

6.  Get another tooth pick and dip the end of it into the first pile of nail polish and put one dot per flower on your nail.

7.  Dip a different toothpick into the second pile and make five dots per flower around the first one!

Below is an example.  The pink would be your base color the silver your first pile and the yellow your second pile!
